Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo is a film that attempts to answer the following question: What kind of woman
would pay for sexual or emotional gratification? A more appropriate mystery would be what sort of moviegoer is willing to shell out hard-earned bucks for this cheesy and obvious drivel. Former Saturday Night Live and Men Behaving Badly star Rob Schneider plays a nerdy, bumbling fish tank cleaner who housesits for a gigolo and ends up taking a job as “man whore” (as the characters in the film call it) when he accidentally wrecks the fellow’s apartment. The setup has some possibilities, but Schneider and his cowriter Harris Goldberg run out of ideas quickly. That doesn’t stop them from repeating lame jokes about obesity and Tourette’s syndrome even when they aren’t funny to begin with. The elephantine direction by rookie Mike Mitchell doesn’t help. He has the unique ability to make sex and flatulence jokes seem stale and bombastic. Like most movies starring SNL alumni, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo is limp and fails to satisfy. (R) Rating: 2
